Jets pick up two Baylor Boys
The Jets picked up sixth-round picks to aid their ground-and-pound attack.
The team used its first two compensatory picks to nab two Baylor boys -- RB Terrance Ganaway (202nd overall) and G Robert T. Griffin (203rd overall).
The 6-0, 241-pound Ganaway knows how to pack a punch when bursting through holes. The power runner broke school records his senior year, churning out 1,547 yards and 21 touchdowns last season for the Bears. He also posted three games of 300-plus yards last year, including 417 yards and six touchdowns on 46 carries in a game against Clarksville.
"I'm excited," said Ganaway, who totaled 200 yards and five touchdowns in the Alamo Bowl. "Ready to put in work and ready to win games. I know coach (Rex) Ryan and his staff do a good job of getting the guys ready to go, and I'm ready to be a part of the organization."
Ganaway, whose nickname is "G-Way," said the spike in his production was a product of getting more opportunities his senior season and played with a chip on his shoulder. He had just 295 yards in 2010.
"I'm big when I need to be, but light on my feet where, if a hole is closed, I can jump out, one gap and still be downhill, make some big plays, be dynamic when it calls for me to be," said Ganaway, a nephew of former All Pro linebacker Jeremiah Trotter. "Just be a guy that's dependable, reliable and can get some tough yards."
While RGIII was selected second overall by Washington, the Jets landed their own Griffin -- Robert T. Griffin.
Affectionately, bIcknamed "RGII" or "Big Griff" by his teammates and agent, the Baylor offensive lineman has experience at both guard and tackle. But he said he feels more natural at guard. "That's where I can make my living at," he said.
Griffin, who earned All-Big 12 honors as as a senior, made 12 starts last season at right guard and totaled 72 knockdowns.
Now that he's the only Robert Griffin on a football team, will he give up his nickname?
Not a chance.
"Me and my agent, we make jokes about that name. he started calling me that too, so I'm going to keep that name, im going to keep my motto, im going to keep "Big Griff" RGII, it's nothing different."
