Jets place Antwan Barnes (knee) on IR; re-sign LB Ricky Sapp
Antwan Barnes is done for the season.
The Jets announced Wednesday that they placed the outside linebacker on injured reserve and re-signed linebacker Ricky Sapp.
Barnes -- a former Charger who was signed this offseason as a pass-rush specialist -- injured his right knee in Monday night's win over the Falcons. On film, it appeared Barnes' right leg got stuck and twisted slightly in the Georgia Dome turf as he tried to get around an offensive lineman.
Unable to put any weight on his right leg, the Jets defender had to be helped off the field -- hopping all the way to the sideline on his left foot.
Though a severe injury wasn't initally feared, Barnes' ominous tweet Wednesday morning proved otherwise.
"Just want to take the time to thank everyone who is supporting me through this time," he wrote, hours before the Jets announced the transaction. "...my spirits is still high and I will be back..#Jetpride."
Barnes, who signed a three-year deal worth about $4 million in March, finishes the season with two sacks and a team-high 12 quarterback hits.
The Jets also replaced defensive tackle Junior Aumavae on the practice squad with former Georgia Tech DT Terence Barnes.
Sapp was released on Oct. 5, along with Ryan Spadola, to make room for Mike Goodon and receiver Michael Campbell on the active roster.
