The Jets' GM search has expanded.

As NFL Network first reported, Dolphins asst GM Brian Gaine has asked for, and received, permission to interview with the Jets. According to Albert Breer, the interview is scheduled for this week.

Gaine is often referred to as a Bill Parcells disciple. As one article put it: "Wherever Bill Parcells goes, so does Gaine."

Gaine worked for a few years under Parcells with the Jets. He was a member of the team's college scouting department and was the manager of pro player development. He also was an aide to his mentor, during Parcells' time as the head coach of the Cowboys. And eventually went to Miami after Parcells and Jeff Ireland were brought over.

The Jets also requested permission to interview San Diego's director of player personnel Jimmy Raye, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Raye -- whose father Jimmy Raye II is a former Jets assistant and running backs coach -- was a finalist for the Chargers' vacant GM job. But the team annouced Wednesday afternoon that it had hired Colts director of player personnel Tom Telesco.

And for the second time in as many days, the Jets have lost out on a potential candidate.

Falcons director of player personnel Dave Caldwell flew to New Jersey Tuesday for a second interview with owner Woody Johnson. But hours later, he had agreed to become the Jaguars new GM. The snub reportedly left the Jets "scrambling a bit" for more options. Johnson requested permission to speak to Telesco this week, according to Breer. But before getting a chance to interview with the Jets, he flew back to San Diego and accepted the job.

Despite speculation that 49ers' director of player personnel Tom Gamble was the frontrunner to land the Jets job, it's clear Johnson isn't close to naming Mike Tannenbaum's successor.
