Jets to host West Virginia QB Geno Smith: sources
West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith will work out with the Jets this week, sources confirmed to Newsday Monday.
Smith, who is projected to be a first-round pick in this month’s NFL draft, will meet with the Jets Wednesday and Thursday before traveling to Cleveland for a visit with the Browns Saturday. The news was first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
But Smith isn’t the only quarterback the Jets will host this week. The team reportedly will bring in Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel for a visit, per the New York Daily News. Though there’s a good chance Smith won’t be on the board by the time the Jets pick ninth, Manuel likely will fall until late in the first round or the second – which could work out for the Jets, who have the 39th overall pick as well.
A host of players have already visited with the Jets, and more will walk through their Florham Park doors in the coming days. On Monday, Virginia offensive tackle Oday Aboushi tweeted about his visit to the team’s facility:
“Meeting with coach Rex and the GM went great. My kinda guys for my style of play. #ganggreen,” the Brooklyn-born Aboushi wrote.
At the conclusion of his visit, he tweeted: “Great day with the Jets! All around a great organization with no limits.”
Texas A&M running back Christine Michael also tweeted Monday while on a two-day visit to New Jersey. "Week just got longer," he wrote, "...NY jets today and tomo...Denver broncos Wednesday n Thursday then raiders Friday n Saturday..."
In local news: Stony Brook running back Miguel Maysonet will meet with the Giants on Wednesday, followed by a Friday trip to the Jets. Maysonet, the runner-up for the FCS’ Walter Payton Award, was slowed by a hamstring injury at the NFL Scouting Combine. But he clocked unofficial times of 4.45, 4.49 and 4.56 in the 40-yard dash at his pro day March 22.
