In a surprising move, the Jets announced Monday that they waived punter Robert Malone and re-signed Ryan Quigley.

Malone -- who was signed last year to replace T.J. Conley -- had been solid for the club. But he also had a bad game Thursday night against the rival Patriots, averaging 44.6 yards (36.6 net) on nine attempts, including a 21-yard punt in the second quarter from the New England 41.

Malone, 25, missed over a week of training camp with a back injury.

Quigley, who was signed this offseason to compete with Malone, averaged 40.7 yards (net) on 10 punts this offseason. He was waived by the Jets on Aug. 26.

Quigley, 23, joined the NFL after he signed with Chicago as an undrafted free agent in May 2012. As a senior at Boston College in 2011, he finished fourth in the nation with 28 punts downed inside the 20.

The Jets also announced they’ve released WR Rahsaan Vaughan from the practice squad and signed LB Danny Lansanah to the practice squad.
