Joe Namath: 'No rhyme or reasoning' to play Mark Sanchez in 4Q

Joe Namath sounded off on the Jets' decision to insert Mark Sanchez in the fourth quarter of Saturday night's MetLife Bowl against the Giants.

"You do not put your quarterback in there in that situation, not the guy that is probably going to be your starter behind a makeshift offensive line in a preseason game," the Jets Hall of Famer said Tuesday during an interview on "The Rich Eisen Podcast."

"Come on. There was no rhyme or reasoning to that."

After rookie Geno Smith's erratic performance, Sanchez was surprisingly put in the game behind a backup offensive line. He didn't last long however. After getting sacked on his first play, he was forced to leave the game after getting hit by Giants defensive end Marvin Austin.

Sanchez, who underwent an X-ray and MRI, is listed as day-to-day with a bruised right shoulder joint. But it's unclear whether the fifth-year quarterback -- who hasn't been able to practice this week -- will be healthy enough for their season opener against the Bucs on Sept. 8.

"I wish (Ryan) would just say it was wrong -- 'I made a mistake,'" Namath said. "But instead he was talking about the competitive feelings of wanting to win. That's just beating around the bush. My man made a mistake, Rich!

"...None of us when we're in position to be critiqued -- if it's not good -- we don't like to hear it. And I know it's been uncomfortable for the Jets, Mr. (Woody) Johnson, Rex or whatever," Namath said, referring to the Jets' owner. "It's uncomfortable for me. It has been for me since I've been around and noticed a subtle change in our relationships."
