Mangold picks training camp over sister's London Olympics
Rex Ryan told Nick Mangold he’d give him a pass, but the Jets center wouldn’t take it.
So rather than travel to London to see his little sister compete in the 2012 Olympics, Mangold will be in Cortland, N.Y. sweating it out with his teammates.
“God bless Rex cause he did offer it to me, but I don’t think I can leave my guys in the middle of training camp,” Mangold said Tuesday on NFL Network. “But we’ll figure out a way to watch it, and I’m real excited and real proud for her. Somehow, some way, I’ll watch it. But I don’t know if I can do the jump over the pond in the middle of training camp.”
Holley Mangold (5-8, 374) earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic women’s weightlifting team in March, after winning the clean-and-jerk competition (319 pounds) and coming in second in the two-hand snatch (242 pounds).
Mangold began his NFL Network interview by discussing his newest goal: getting Tim Tebow paired up with hurdler Lolo Jones – who, like the Jets backup quarterback, is an outspoken virgin.
When the media descended upon Tebow’s locker last Thursday, Mangold chanted “Lo-Lo! Lo-Lo! Lo-Lo.” But, “my message kind of got lost in the ‘Tebow Time’ chanting,” the center said.
Though Mangold’s unsure if the two will be “united,” he said: “This is now my new goal. This is how I’m going to spend my spring. Usually I try to do a little golfing, but that isn’t going so well. Now it’s matchmaking.”
