Mark Sanchez at Jets practice, riding bike
The sight of quarterback Mark Sanchez riding the stationary bike Monday at Jets practice was encouraging in the sense that he is on the premises in what appeared to be recovery mode.
On the other hand, he wasn’t using his right hand to push the handlebar on that side, apparently, because he is resting the right shoulder injured by Giants defensive lineman Marvin Austin on Saturday night.
The Jets have listed Sanchez as “day-to-day,” but more information could be forthcoming in coach Rex Ryan’s 2:15 news conference Monday. Sanchez already has been ruled out of Thursday’s exhibition finale against Philadelphia. Rookie Geno Smith took first-team snaps in the portion of practice the media was allowed to watch and was followed by veteran Greg McElroy and first-year QB Matt Simms.
In other encouraging injury news, wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who is recovering from Lisfranc foot surgery and was placed on the active roster on Friday, took part in a passing drill to begin practice. However, rookie CB Dee Milliner, CB Antonio Cromartie and DL Kenrick Ellis all were part of the crew riding bikes.
The Jets made all the cuts necessary to get the roster down to Tuesday’s 75-man limit. WR Braylon Edwards and RB Joe McKnight were the most notable veterans to go. But the release of OL Stephen Peterman made it clear that Vladimir Ducasse and Kent State rookie Brian Winters will work at right guard. Also, veteran punter Robert Malone is now the only punter on the roster after the release of Ryan Quigley.
The other players released include: WR Joe Collins, OL Patrick Ford, DB Donnie Fletcher, OL Trey Gilleo, DB Bret Lockett, LB Sean Progar-Jackson, WR Marcus Rucker, long snapper Patrick Scales, RB Chad Spann and WRs K.J. Stroud and Rahsaan Vaughn.
