Report: Pending physical, Mark Sanchez will sign with Eagles
Looks like the Eagles and Jets are set to swap backup quarterbacks.
According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Mark Sanchez is headed to Philly. Interestingly enough, the Jets released Sanchez on Friday, just moments before they announced they had signed Eagles free-agent Michael Vick.
Vick signed a one-year deal worth $5 million.
Sanchez’s contract was officially terminated at 4 p.m. on Monday. He’s now a free agent himself – and free to sign with whoever he chooses. And, according to ESPN, he's headed to the Eagles, pending a physical.
“Sanchez "failed physical" termination w Jets was protocol,” Mortensen tweeted Monday afternoon. “Won't affect next step - signing with Eagles. He's on good recovery from surgery.”
The Eagles currently have three quarterbacks on the roster -- starter Nick Foles, fellow USC alum Matt Barkley and G.J. Kinne, who briefly spent time with the Jets in training camp back in 2012. The Philadelphia Inquirer also reported the Eagles' interest in Sanchez, but the team needs to "look further into his medical condition before they sign him to a contract," according to a source close to the situation.
But according to an NFL Network report, the Giants could also be interested in signing Sanchez, who is recovering from shoulder surgery.
Earlier in the day, Sanchez tweeted his goodbyes to the Jets organizations, their fan base and his former teammates. The veteran quarterback, who spent five seasons in Florham, said “playing quarterback for the New York Jets has been the thrill of my young career.”
