No Tim Tebow in Jacksonville, says new GM

Dave Caldwell dropped several nuggets in his introductory press conference in Jacksonville Thursday.

The biggest of which was this: Tim Tebow won't be a Jaguar in 2013.

It seemed all but certain Tebow would end up in his hometown next season after a wasting his 2012 campaign with the Jets. A league source confirmed last month that the Jets were open to either trading or releasing the seldom-used backup quarterback.

But Caldwell made it clear he’s not interested in Tebow.

Asked if Tebow would be a possible candidate in their quarterback competition next season, the Jaguars new GM said: “He is a member of the New York Jets. I can’t imagine a scenario where he’d be a Jacksonville Jaguar. Even if he’s released.”

Caldwell flew to New Jersey Tuesday for a second interview with Jets owner Woody Johnson. But later that day, he chose Jacksonville.

During his Thursday press conference, Caldwell admitted Jaguars owner Shad Khan “made” him visit the Jets again – just to be sure of his decision. And apparently, Caldwell’s second interview with Johnson provided all the clarity he needed.

“This is where I want to be,” he said of the Jaguars organization. “I know we can be successful here.

“…I knew within two seconds I wanted to be a part of (Khan's) vision.”

Khan fired his former GM Gene Smith, but chose to retain head coach Mike Mularkey. But on Thursday, Caldwell made the decision to let Mularkey go.

Caldwell explained that as a first-time GM, he needed to have “a fresh start across the board.”

Interestingly enough, that’s the opposite approach Johnson is taking with his GM search. The Jets owner said during his second-end press conference Tuesday that coach Rex Ryan was part of the deal.
