Phoenix – Pete Carroll said the mess at the quarterback position is not Mark Sanchez’s fault.

Carroll coached Sanchez when the two were at Southern Cal and was asked about the apparent regression in Sanchez’ NFL career over the last two seasons. He’s gone from being the Jets’ first-round pick and rookie starter, winning four road playoff games in two years, to missing the postseason in the last two years and even being benched at the end of 2012.

“I think it’s all about team, I don’t think it’s about one guy,” Carroll said. “I never have and I won’t. It’s about the team around you.”

Carroll, the head coach of the Seahawks, spoke yesterday at the NFC coaches breakfast at the league meetings in Arizona. He went on to say that he thinks Sanchez will rebound from two poor seasons … as soon as the rest of the Jets do.

“Everybody contributes,” he said. “Pass pro, route running, catching, running the football, defense, kicking. It all factors into the situation that a quarterback has to deal with. And I think Mark has shown plenty of good play and he’s going to do a really good job when everything gets settled in and all that. I just think it’s a product of where they are.”
