Report: Jets to cut Pace & Scott, among others
Pretty much every Jets fans knows the team plans to part ways with its aging linebackers. But Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com cemented the eventuality in a post earlier today:
"As soon as the waiver period opens in February, the Jets will clear $30.7 million off their salary cap in less time than it takes to hail a cab in New York," he wrote.
"The Jets will release LB Calvin Pace ($8.56 million savings), LB Bart Scott ($7.15 million), OT Jason Smith ($12 million) and S Eric Smith ($3 million). Those moves will result in only $4.5 million in dead money."
But Cimini also points out the Jets are in a tight spot because of their salary cap situation. Cutting those four guys means the team will have just 10 starters under contract (remember, the Jets have 16 soon-to-be free agents). But, unfortunately for their new GM, the Jets don't have much cap room to work with.
