Who said Tim Tebow can’t cut it in the NFL?

Apparently Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is willing to take a chance on the former Jets backup quarterback. ESPN’s Ed Werder reported Monday that Tebow plans to sign with the New England Patriots and attend Tuesday’s mandatory minicamp. Per NFL Network, Tebow is en route to Foxboro now.

As if the Week 1 Revis Bowl wasn’t enough for Jets fans, now they’ll have the pleasure of seeing Tebow and the Patriots in primetime on Sept. 12 (provided the former Jets backup can stick in New England).

Despite the well-documented criticisms of Tebow's throwing mechanics, the move shouldn't come as a surprise. New England’s offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was the Broncos head coach when the team drafted Tebow in 2010.

Last month, Yahoo! Sports writer Mike Silver wrote there was no chance Tebow would ever sign with New England because Belichick “hates” him as a player. But the surly head coach recently defended himself to ESPN Boston, saying: “Every single player has strengths and weaknesses but regardless of that, for anyone to have represented that is the way I feel about Tim Tebow is completely untrue, baseless and irresponsible. It is unfortunate that something so inaccurate was reported.”

After being a nonfactor in 2012 with the Jets -- eight pass attempts, 102 rushing yards in 15 games -- new general manager John Idzik released Tebow in April.

Despite recent rumblings that his stint in the NFL is “probably over,” it seems Belichick may just have a plan to save Tebow's career.
