Rex Ryan confirmed Friday that a tight hamstring kept Mike Goodson out of practice and off to the side with trainers. But the Jets coach said he wasn’t “overly concerned” by the injury.

“He was a little tight today and he went with the trainers for a while,” Ryan said, when asked about Goodson spending time in the rehab area during practice. “The thing about Mike is, like we’ve said, we’ll see how he progresses during the week. It’s tough when you’ve been out that long to get out, so how many reps he plays, I’ll just say like I did yesterday, I hope he plays. That’s what I’m hoping for.”

Ryan said Friday was the first time Goodson has experienced tightness in his hamstring. The running back has served his four-game suspension for an offseason arrest, but still counts as a roster exemption. The Jets would have to make a roster move in order to add him to the 53-man roster.

But, for now, Goodson’s status for Monday night in Atlanta is up in the air due to his injury. Special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica said Goodson’s hamstring is a concern, considering the various roles the running back could potentially fill.

“He’s got ability back there,” Kotwica said of Goodson’s kickoff-return ability. “Very much so like his running back skills. He has a burst to him. He has quickness.

"Historically, we’ve had success with running backs, Leon Washington, who was here, and even Brad Smith who carried the ball at Missouri as (a dual-threat) quarterback. He has the vision to see the hole and he has the burst to get through it. He’s done some good things. He looks explosive out there. So, I’m excited for him. We’ll see what he does when he gets back out on the field.

The coordinator said Goodson has been used on punt-return duty, as well.

Ryan couldn’t say for sure if Goodson practiced fully (the running back doesn’t appear on the official injury report because he’s not on the active roster). But the Jets coach said “I don’t believe he got any plays.”

Still, Ryan wasn’t particularly surprised or troubled by Goodson’s setback.

“You expect a guy that (has just started practicing with the team), he’s not getting full reps, he hasn’t been getting full reps the entire week, and that’s just because he’s just coming back. But again, I hope he can contribute on Monday for us.”
