Rex laughs off TattooGate
Rex Ryan’s love for his wife knows no bounds.
And some, of course, would argue the same can be said for his feelings about Mark Sanchez.
But the Jets coach maintained the tattoo of his wife sporting a No. 6 jersey had more to do with his affection for Michelle than anything else.
“There’s a question: is that a real tattoo or not? I’ll keep you guessing,” Ryan joked Tuesday. “It is funny. It is a tattoo I’ve had going on three years now. I know what you're thinking. Obviously, if Sanchez doesn’t play well, that number is changing. That’s pretty much a given.
“But, no, I've been married 25 years and through my eyes, my wife's the most beautiful woman in the world. So that's what it is."
A tattoo artist named Eugeniustat2 took credit for Ryan’s body art on Instagram a few days ago. But he said the concept of the tattoo was devised by a Jets fan. “He brought it in himself, we just agreed on changing the number from 8 to 6!!! Lol,” he wrote underneath a side-by-side image of Rex’s tattoed arm and the front-page Daily News story.
Naturally, Ryan was asked about his body art during his afternoon radio spot on The Michael Kay show. The coach confirmed the original drawing included a No. 8, but after the Jets went to back-to-back AFC title games, he told the tattoo artist “Man, just make it a 6.”
Ryan admitted he really didn’t put much thought into it.
