Rex pushes back practice time to prevent injuries
*Updated at 3:03 p.m.*
A short while ago, a Jets spokesperson told the media that the practice scheduling change won't be that noticeable after all.
The team will add 10 minutes to it stretching period -- so instead of stretching from 8-8:10 a.m., players will stretch from 8-8:20 a.m.
Ryan started his press conference off with the new schedule change, indicating the start time would be 8:30 a.m. But, alas, the media doesn't get an extra half hour of sleep, as previously thought (LOL).
CORTLAND – Rex Ryan will push the start time for practice back 30 minutes in hopes of limiting the risk of “soft-tissue” injuries among his players.
Instead of the usual 8 a.m. start, the Jets will allot 20 minutes for a stretch/warm-up session before practice.
“We’ve had a lot of hamstrings, and those type of deals, and if we can prevent them, our strength and conditioning (coaches) and our trainers feels that will give us a better chance of being successful with the hamstrings and all that. So that’s what we’ll do.”
The time change comes a day after star cornerback Darrelle Revis was limited in Sunday’s practice due to hamstring tightness. Revis showed no ill effects from the injury today, participating in every phase of practice (individuals, 7-on-7s and team drills). But Ryan's goal is to err on the side of caution for all of his players.
“What can we do to help prevent the soft-tissue injuries right now?” the coach said. “And we think this’ll give us the best chance to be successful.”
The coach also said WR Chaz Schilens has a “groin issue,” but it’s not serious, he said.
“He was trying to tough it through, and all that,” Ryan said of Schilens, who had quite a few drops in practice. “He’s had a history of having some major injuries – this is more minor. But instead of going out and pushing it, popping a hamstring. It’s more preventative.”
The coach he chose the 8 a.m. start time based on the two-a-day practice schedule. But he didn’t account for the change in CBA rules that limit one practice per day.
