Rex 'not worried' about Tebow signing with Patriots

Rex Ryan isn’t the least bit worried – or curious – about how the New England Patriots plan to use Tim Tebow in their offense.

“Not really,” the Jets coach said prior to Tuesday’s mandatory minicamp practice. “If they wanna replace Brady with him, that's fine.

"I’m not worried about anything, really. Like I said, I’m happy for the young man to get another opportunity in the league and things like that. But we’ve already mentioned that it didn’t work out here. Obviously, Tim had more success in Denver than he did here, so it is what it is.”

After less than two months of unemployment, following his release from the Jets, Tebow agreed to join Bill Belichick in Foxboro. The former Jets backup quarterback signed a two-year deal with New England.

“It’s not a surprise to me that Tim would be picked up,” said Ryan. “Obviously, as I’ve said before, he’s a tremendous young man, very competitive. So, I’m happy for him and look forward to competing against him.”

Even in the height of the Tebowmania here in Florham Park, the former Florida Gator rarely saw action on the field. He threw just eight passes (six completions) and rushed for 102 yards in 15 games as Mark Sanchez’s backup. But all the while, Ryan stressed Tebow’s presence would force opponents to spend valuable practice time game-planning for the former Heisman Trophy winner.

But with the QB now in enemy territory, Ryan downplayed the Tebow effect on the Jets' preparation.

“Well now, I think the whole league is game-planning for running quarterbacks, if you will,” he said. “So that’s something that we’ve been doing. And I think, during the course of the year, Geno Smith could be that guy. I think many teams are having those types of quarterbacks now.”

But won’t it be weird to square-off against Tebow? Not really, said Ryan.

“You look throughout our league now,” the coach said, “you’ve got Tim with New England, you have Dustin Keller in Miami, you’ve got Mike Pettine & Co. in Buffalo, so there’s a lot of my former guys throughout the league. You’ve got Shonn Greene in Tennessee, that we’re going to go up against. Always wish those guys the best, unless they play against us obviously.”

Asked to give Belichick advice on how to deal with Tebowmania, Ryan said: “Oh, please. He's not going to listen to me.”

Though accustomed to fielding Tebow questions, Ryan said inquiries about his ex-QB would be better served up in New England with Belichick.

“I'm, sure you'll get the answers from him,” he said.

In practice news:

* Ryan said “everyone” is here for mandatory minicamp, though he did mention a player (CB Eric Crocker) recently suffered a death in the family.

* WR Stephen Hill (knee) is expected to participate in team drills Tuesday, though Ryan cautioned: “I don’t know how much.” …WR Santonio Holmes (Lisfranc) obviously won’t practice. …WR Jeremy Kerley will be out there as well. The slot receiver sat out team drills on Wednesday due to a heel issue. …WR Clyde Gates (hamstring) likely will sit out practice or he’ll be very limited in practice. …WR Ryan Spadola (hamstring) also will be out. …NT Antonio Garay and LB Garrett McIntyre will be limited.

* Ryan on tryout guys, TE Kellen Winslow and WR Mike Sims-Walker: “Man, I hope both of them are like they used to be. 'Cause that would be good. They’ll be trying out for a few days and signing here. But we’ll see. It is a good opportunity to evaluate some guys. Obviously Kellen Winslow was a tremendous player in this league for a long time – one of the premier receiving tight ends in the game. So we’ll see how he responds. Obviously, it’s going to be recovery more than anything else. How healthy he is.”
