Rex Ryan wants an apology from Reggie Bush
Rex Ryan made it clear he wasn't happy with Reggie Bush -- the Dolphins running back who offered a "what goes around, comes around" stance on Darrelle Revis' season-ending knee injury last month.
"I apologized for my comment," the Jets coach said of Bush Wednesday. "I expect him to do the same."
The tension arose from a seemingly innocuous comment by the Jets in the lead-up to their Week 3 matchup in Miami. Ryan and his players said their goal was to "put some hot sauce" on Bush, who was in the midst of a career resurgence in South Florida. But those words struck a nerve with the running back -- and ultimately took on a life of their own -- after Bush was forced to leave the game (and eventual 23-20 overtime Jets win) just before halftime.
Though the injury did not appear serious, Bush -- who had 61 rushing yards in the first half -- did not return to the game. Coincidentally, Revis left the game in the third quarter with a far more serious knee injury.
Bush, however, seemed unsympathetic at the time.
"They talked all week about putting hot sauce and this and that, and they ended up losing their best player for the rest of the season," Bush said during a radio interview after the game. "So, it's sad that it happened because of that, but I'm going to be back."
The following day, Ryan apologized, explaining that he and his players would never intentionally injure someone. On Wednesday, the coach issued another apology because his comments were taken out of context.
"But, I'm sorry," he said. "He's a player that warrants a lot of attention."
Ryan seemed firm in his desires for an apology from Bush, but when the topic was revisted later, the Jets coach backed off.
"I don’t expect one," he said. "I think, maybe, Revis or whatever. Because I'm sure he kind of got caught up in the moment. He was injured...I mean, obviously no one likes to get hurt. And that certainly wasn't my intention and I hope he understands. But he doesn't have to ever say anything to me, or even reach out for Revis.
"But I would expect him to. For the simple fact that, that's his peer. That's one of the elite players in this league."
