As Santonio Holmes sees it, the Jets quarterback competition is simply a formality.

The wide receiver believes incumbent Mark Sanchez – and not rookie Geno Smith or veteran David Garrard – will be the team’s starting QB in 2013.

“Right now, it's Sanchez, and that's who we're going with, and we're going to continue on this road until time permits,” Holmes said in his first public interview Wednesday evening on NBC Sports Network.

Holmes and Sanchez seem to have rebounded from a rocky relationship that helped derail the Jets’ playoff hopes at the end of the 2011 season. And now Holmes – who claimed to ease Sanchez’s fears following the Tim Tebow trade last year  – is again throwing his support behind Sanchez.

When asked to describe what it was like playing with Tebow in 2012, Holmes politely evaded the question. “That one, I'm going to leave unanswered for that one,” said the receiver, who suffered a season-ending Lisfranc injury in Week 4. “I have no answer for that one. I didn't get a chance to play with Tim Tebow, so I can't fully express myself on the situation.”

Holmes, who agreed to restructure his contract earlier this offseason, said he hopes to be a Jet for “the long term.”

“And if it means helping out the team, I’m going to continue helping out the team in any way possible,” he said.

Holmes – who has spent most of the offseason rehabbing his foot and taking classes at Ohio State – said he was in disbelief over the Darrelle Revis trade to Tampa Bay.

Revis suffered a season-ending torn left ACL the week before Holmes went down with his injury.

“I didn't believe it," said the wideout. “I was constantly getting text messages and phone calls, asking me about the situation, and all I can say is congrats to Reve. He deserves to get paid the way he's playing, and I hope he gets well with his injury to provide some great defense for the Bucs."
