Source: FB Lex Hilliard (broken scapula) out for season
Fullback Lex Hilliard is done for the year and will undergo surgery on a broken scapula, a source confirmed to Newsday Wednesday morning.
Hilliard suffered the injury on a run play during Tuesday’s practice and had to be helped off the field by team doctors.
“As soon as I see a guy like that, writhing in pain, you know it’s serious,” tight end Konrad Reuland said. “There are certain guys where it’s like, ‘OK, he’ll probably be alright.’ But when you see a guy like Lex -- a tough guy – go down like that, it’s just bad.”
Though Hilliard didn’t play in either of the Jets’ first two preseason games, he had been practicing with a broken rib – an injury he kept a secret for “4 or 5 days,” according to a teammate. “It took him having to collapse in the weight room trying to do something” for the Jets to find out, the player said.
Hilliard had been competing for the starting job with rookie draft pick Tommy Bohanon – but it appeared Bohanon had the edge prior to Hilliard going down.
