Source: Sanchez knew Geno pick a possibility
Jets GM John Idzik said Friday that he didn't speak to Mark Sanchez prior to drafting Geno Smith 39th overall. But in reality, Sanchez was aware the pick was a possibility before the Jets pulled the trigger, according to a source.
Idzik said during a press conference that he hadn't spoken to Sanchez because he was a bit busy in the Jets war room Friday.
"We've been a little preoccupied," Idzik said, giving the impression that Sanchez had again been left in the dark about a significant QB acquisition.
Former GM Mike Tannenbaum didn't consult or inform Sanchez prior to the Tim Tebow trade last year. But a source confirmed Sanchez wasn't caught off guard this time.
Earlier in the day, ESPN's Sal Paolantonio reported the Jets talked to Sanchez "all day" about their decision to take Smith. That tidbit, according to Paolantonio, came from Sanchez's older brother Nick, who also serves as his agent. Paolantonio said he asked Nick Sanchez if his brother wants to remain a Jet -- to which Nick responded: “I haven’t asked him that question yet. He will comment at a later time.”
