Tebow: 'I'm a QB first and foremost'
The theory on Tim Tebow has always been that he is a quarterback who is more dangerous with his legs than with his arm. So is running with the ball a safer option for him than throwing?
“Sometimes,” Tebow said. “If they are dropping seven, eight guys, you’ve got to be smart because you’re just not going to fit the ball in some of those windows. You’ve got to be smart and get what you can. If I can fight for a few of those first downs, then do it. But at the same time, be smart.”
Tebow’s wisdom and mobility was best displayed by the 20-yard run he had on 3rd-and-16 to bring the Jets into Panther territory on the final drive during their 17-12 loss on Sunday.
“When you kind of get to a point where you don’t see anyone downfield then it’s like, you try to make a play, getting a first down with my legs,” he said. “Probably the same thing happened on the interception, I was trying to force the ball downfield when I should have just ran with my legs and I could have got it. Don’t force it, don’t try to make something incredible happen, just let it happen. I think that’s kind of what I did on the 3rd-and-16.”
Tebow said he has seen improvement in the rhythm and timing of his throws - Rex Ryan also said his mechanics have improved - despite completing just 4 of 14 passes for 55 yards with an interception on Sunday. In three preseason games he is 13-for-36, a completion percentage of just 36 percent.
While the world is anxiously waiting to see how Tebow is utilized in the Jets secretive Wildcat package, some are suggesting it's time for Tebow, who had five carries for 45 yards on Sunday, to make a position change. Considering his running ability, and his less than impressive numbers so far this preseason, some say Tebow is better suited to be a running back, including ESPN analyst Merril Hoge.
“With Tim Tebow, I know they are going to pull out the Wildcat, but right now they need power football,” Hoge said on Sportscenter. “Move him to running back, establish that…He is big and strong and powerful. His heart is a 10. I think he is a guy who is going to get some carries.”
“Well I’ll take that as a compliment from him,” Tebow said with a smile. “But I’m a quarterback first and foremost. However else I can help the team, I’ll help the team.”
