Former Florida coach Urban Meyer has his hands full as the new coach at Ohio State, where he must revive a program facing probation and no bowl game this season. But he found time the past couple days to show up at Jets camp to offer moral support to Tim Tebow, who helped Florida win national titles after the 2006 and 2008 seasons and also won the 2007 Heisman Trophy.

“I went to dinner with him [Wednesday] night, and he was at both practices yesterday and today,” Tebow said after Thursday’s OTA practice open to the media. “Also it was nice to hang with someone I’m very close to, a father figure, and also my strength coach [Mickey Marotti] from Florida and is now at Ohio State is here as well. It was great to be able to hang out with those guys and to be able to catch up a little bit.”

Tebow said Meyer (pictured) wasn’t here to offer any coaching. Leaving that to Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano and quarterback coach Matt Cavanaugh. “He’s worked with me so much,” Tebow said of Meyer, “I know everything he’s going to tell me.”

While Meyer paid homage to his former student with a personal visit, a 17-year-old student named Chuck Shiner took a $5 bet with his friends to “Tebow” during his graduation ceremony at Bishop Veret in Fort Meyers, Fla. Shiner knelt in front of his principal as if in prayer the way Tebow is known to do when he scores. Worried that Shiner would inspire future graduation pranks, the school withheld his diploma until he cleaned the gym where the ceremony was held.

“I don’t think his diploma should be withheld,” Tebow said. “”It was probably something a lot of people laughed at. I don’t know if it was necessarily appropriate, but I definitely think he should be able to graduate…It was all about the intentions he had. If it was for a bet, maybe.”
