In a surprising move, the Jets released veteran linebacker Bryan Thomas on Saturday and moved CB Donnie Fletcher from the practice squad to the active roster.

Fans – and media alike – were stunned, of course, considering Thomas was the longest-tenured player on the roster.

But it appears it simply was a logistical move.

With Ellis Lankster’s lingering back injury, the Jets had to bring up Fletcher. And as a veteran, Thomas isn’t subject to waivers – unlike the young guys.

The expectation is that Thomas (who has been dealing with nagging injuries of his own) will be back on the Jets roster by early this week. …That is, unless another team doesn’t snatch him up. (cough – Belichick – cough)
