Wooden, Kelly hired by Chargers
Less than a week after John Idzik decided not to renew the contracts of two area scouts, two staffers -- JoJo Wooden and Kevin Kelly -- bolted for San Diego, sources told Newsday Monday morning.
Wooden, the Jets' former assistant director of player personnel, will now be the director of player personnel for the Chargers. Kelly, a Midwest area scout, was named as the team's new director of college scouting.
The Chargers announced the hirings via their Twitter account Monday afternoon.
Their departures comes on the heels of Idzik's decision not to renew the contracts of scouts Michael Davis and Joe Bommarito. Davis was responsible for the Southeast region, including SEC and ACC schools -- and second-round pick Geno Smith. Of his 16 years with the Jets the past five were spent as the assistant scouting director.
Bommarito, who was responsible for scouting on the West Coast, worked for the Jets for 12 years.
A source said Wooden had a year left on his contract, but chose to leave because of the promotion. He first joined the Jets in 1997. Kelly, on the other hand, spent just one year with the Jets.
