Rex Ryan confirmed the obvious Monday: Rookie Geno Smith will start Thursday night’s game against the Patriots.
Despite an uneven performance in Sunday’s regular-season opener against the Bucs, the rookie quarterback impressed with his poise and his field vision. But truth be told, the Jets have no other choice but to start Smith.

The Jets brass has insisted Mark Sanchez’s shoulder injury is a day-to-day setback. But, to no surprise, reports indicate the quarterback’s injury is far more severe than the organization has let on.
About an hour before the game, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen tweeted Sanchez will get a second opinion this week from noted orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James Andrews, because doctors believe Sanchez has...Read more »
As expected, the Jets released Brady Quinn and likely will re-sign him in the coming days.
In a corresponding move, they promoted linebacker Danny Lansanah from the practice squad.
The veteran quarterback was signed on Monday after the team cut ties with backup Graham Harrell. But by releasing Quinn prior to the 4 p.m. roster deadline Saturday, they avoid having to...Read more »
The 2013 Jets still are a work in progress. And so, too, is their quarterback situation.
The competition between Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez is (at least, for now) ongoing, the Jets brass said Wednesday. But both general manager John Idzik and Woody Johnson admitted quarterback stability is extremely important.

The Jets officially announced quarterback Graham Harrell has passed his physical and is a member of the team. In a corresponding move, the Jets released rookie C Dalton Freeman (who has been hampered by an ankle injury).
Harrell, who lost the No. 2 job to Vince Young in Green Bay, will serve as Matt Simm's backup Thursday night against the Eagles.

Matt Simms reportedly will start Thursday night's preseason opener vs. the Eagles and his backup will be newly-signed quarterback Graham Harrell.
Word of Harrell's imminent arrival early Wednesday morning immediately signaled something was wrong with Greg McElroy. The New York Post later reported McElroy re-injured his knee this week in practice, resulting in the team scrambling to sign a...Read more »
Joe Namath sounded off on the Jets' decision to insert Mark Sanchez in the fourth quarter of Saturday night's MetLife Bowl against the Giants.
"You do not put your quarterback in there in that situation, not the guy that is probably going to be your starter behind a makeshift offensive line in a preseason game," the Jets Hall of Famer said Tuesday during an interview on "The...Read more »
The sight of quarterback Mark Sanchez riding the stationary bike Monday at Jets practice was encouraging in the sense that he is on the premises in what appeared to be recovery mode.
On the other hand, he wasn’t using his right hand to push the handlebar on that side, apparently, because he is resting the right shoulder injured by Giants defensive lineman Marvin Austin on Saturday night.
