Nick Mangold is Pro Bowl-bound

Nick Mangold's headed to Hawaii after all.

The Jets center -- who was a first alternate -- was asked to replace Seattle's Max Unger in Honolulu. Unger, of course, will be preparing for the Super Bowl with the rest of the Seahawks.

Mangold, meanwhile, will make his fifth appearance in the Pro Bowl on Jan. 26....

Rex Ryan had hoped his team would be well represented in Hawaii.

But not one Jet – not even defensive stud Muhammad Wilkerson – was named to the 2014 Pro Bowl. Instead, center Nick Mangold and Wilkerson, a third-year defensive end, were selected as first alternates. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who has been battling a nagging hip injury all season, is a second alternate.

Jets-Pats melee fines announced

Three Patriots and two Jets were fined by the NFL for violations resulting from a melee late in the fourth quarter of their Sept. 12 game at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, and a fourth Pat received a fine for an illegal hit on Jets quarterback Geno Smith. An attempt by Jets center Nick Mangold to tackle Pats defensive back Aqib Talib on the sideline after an interception triggered the scuffle.

Willie Colon avoids suspension, not fine

“The good news,” Willie Colon said Thursday in the Jets’ locker room, “is that I’m not suspended. But I was fined.”

A lot? “Yeah. I’m going to appeal.”

Newsday's Kimberley Martin learned from an NFL source the amount of the fine is $35,000.
