Matt Simms' play has cost Greg McElroy his job.
The Jets -- who are in the process of slashing their roster from 75 to 53 -- decided to release McElroy, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

As expected, the Jets announced first-year quarterback Matt Simms will make his first professional start in Thursday night's preseason finale vs. the Eagles at MetLife Stadium.

The Jets officially announced quarterback Graham Harrell has passed his physical and is a member of the team. In a corresponding move, the Jets released rookie C Dalton Freeman (who has been hampered by an ankle injury).
Harrell, who lost the No. 2 job to Vince Young in Green Bay, will serve as Matt Simm's backup Thursday night against the Eagles.
