Bills announce Mike Pettine as new defensive coordinator
During a sit-down interview for the Bills' web site, former Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine discussed the style of defense he plans to bring to Buffalo and his relationship with Jets coach Rex Ryan.
Pettine -- who has spent his entire coaching career with Ryan by his side -- said they both felt it was time for him to step out of Ryan’s shadow and explore other opportunities.
Pettine also said the speculation that his relationship with Ryan has been strained recently is untrue. “He and I are great friends,” he said. “We’re like brothers. Brothers that fight a lot. …We’ll always be tight.”
Ryan has always been seen as the defensive guru on the sideline, but Pettine maintained he had more play-calling duties than people might think.
“For the past couple of years, I’ve had a great opportunity to work with Rex and call a vast majority of their defense,” he said. “I also have a great deal of experience in making adjustments to the defense during the season that helped improve our unit’s performance.”
Unlike the Jets, who primarily use 3-4 front, the Bills employ a 4-3. But Pettine said he isn’t going to shoe horn his new players into the Jets’ defensive mold. He said the Bills defense will be “all of the above,” offering multiple fronts with lots of aggressiveness.
“I’m not bringing any defense here,” Pettine said. “This is going to be the Buffalo Bills defense.”
