Geno Smith will attend Jets West if he's invited
Geno Smith clarified his stance Thursday on Mark Sanchez’s annual Jets West retreat and said he’s more than willing to head to California to work out with his new teammates – provided he gets an invitation.
“Someone asked me about Jets West yesterday and myself and Mark had never discussed that and it kind of caught me off guard because it’s not on my schedule or anything,” said the rookie quarterback. “So I was like, 'What is Jets West?’”
When asked on Wednesday about the possibility of going out west with Sanchez and the rest of the skill position players, Smith delivered several no comments. But Thursday, he explained his terse response.
“Basically, I was taught if you don’t know exactly what you’re asking about, not to comment on it,” he said. “We haven’t talked about it, but from my understanding it’s something that is done annually and all the guys go out there and it’s been a great event.
“So Mark hasn’t officially extended the hand to me, but I’m pretty sure there’s no problem there. I’m more than willing to go there, get some work, work with the guys and all that stuff. Because it helps the team bond and I fully support that.”
So does Smith expect to go if the invitation is given?
“Sure, sure,” he said.
Sanchez chose not to touch the topic of Jets West on Wednesday.
“We’ll just get through minicamp for now,” the fifth-year quarterback said when asked about his plans. “We’ll cross the Jets West bridge when we get there.”
Sanchez wouldn’t say whether he personally invited Smith either.
“Listen, we’ll get to Jets West when we get there,” he said. “Everyone’s always been invited.”
