Jets general manager John Idzik made it clear he’ll look at other quarterbacks this offseason. But it turns out Geno Smith will see a familiar face in the QB room.

Backup Matt Simms, who was set to become an exclusive-rights free agent, has been signed through 2014. He’ll make $495,000 – the second-year minimum salary – next season, according to the league records.

Despite the signings of veterans David Garrard and Brady Quinn, the inexperienced Simms was the Jets' No. 2 quarterback behind Smith. Simms, a Franklin Lakes native and son of former Giants QB Phil Simms, never started a game in 2013. But he replaced Smith three times, completing 16 of 31 passes for 156 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

“(I’m) proud of him,” offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said days after Simms replaced Smith at halftime of a 23-3 loss to Miami on Dec. 1. “Talk about confidence, he doesn’t lack for any confidence either. That’s a good thing.”
