Sanchez will have 'a leg up' in QB competition, says Mornhinweg

Despite the Jets’ insistence on a quarterback competition this offseason, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg admitted incumbent Mark Sanchez “will probably have just a little bit of a leg up, it would appear.”

Here’s the deal: As much as it pains Jets fans to hear this, Sanchez is the best option on the roster and in the current free-agent market. (Oh, and he’s owed A LOT of money!).

General manager John Idzik and Rex Ryan can talk all they want about creating a competition at every position. But without any other (strong) options, Sanchez seems all but set to be the starter in 2013.

If fans were expecting Mornhinweg to detail the ways in which he intends to “fix” Sanchez this offseason, they were disappointed. During Monday’s conference call with reporters, the Jets new OC said he wasn’t sure that term was applicable to Sanchez.

“Mark’s got a lot of strengths and he’s played at a high level and it’s our job to get him to play on a high level on a consistent basis,” Mornhinweg said.

The coordinator -- who described his West Coast system as an “efficient, quarterback-driven offense that runs the ball in a physical and deceptive manner” – said his main goal will be to play to Sanchez’s strengths.

“Offensively I’ll play to a players strengths,” he said. “As you know, Mark has many strengths. …Certainly put him in a position where his strengths will show. I do that at all positions, but certainly at the quarterback spot because it’s so important.

“…He’s played some awfully good games. It’s been just a touch scattered. So that’s our responsibility. He’s proven that he can play at a winning-level, at a high level.”

Mornhinweg did reiterate that his preference is to have competition at all spots, including quarterback.
