Rex kids about Clowney
CORTLAND -- If the Jets wind up securing the No. 1 pick in the May NFL draft, Rex Ryan knows he won’t be present in their war room.
“It's safe to say I won't be here if we draft (Jadeveon) Clowney,” he joked, referring to the South Carolina defensive end who’s expected to be selected first overall in 2014. “I would just say that right now.
“I think we can say that without hesitation.”
Ryan has often said he’s not worried about his job security, despite finishing 8-8 and 6-10, respectively, in 2011 and 2012. He's managed to remain an eternal optimist -- at least publically -- despite not having a set starting quarterback and less skill-position players than he had this time last year.
General manager John Idzik insisted his head coach isn’t feeling the heat in any way, adding, “Pressure is perceived...Rex doesn’t feel pressure.” But if things so south for the Jets, Ryan knows what could be in store.
Asked if he and Idzik discuss their futures beyond the 2013 season, the coach said he and his GM tend to focus more on the present. But, Ryan quickly interjected: “I know who’s in the draft for next year."
