Could the Jets be on the verge of landing Chris Johnson?

The three-time Pro Bowl running back visited the team's Florham Park facility on Tuesday, sources told Newsday. His visit went well, but there still are questions internally about whether Johnson is the same guy he once was in Tennessee.

Known for his speed and shiftiness, Johnson rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his six seasons with the Titans, including 2,006 yards in 2009. He rushed for 1,077 yards and six touchdowns on 279 carries last year and also caught 42 passes for 345 yards and four touchdowns -- all while playing with a torn meniscus.

Johnson, 28, underwent knee surgery in January.

The Jets were one of the teams that had inquired about trading for him, but when no serious trades materialized, the Titans were forced to cut Johnson.

Despite having plenty of salary-cap room (around $26 million) and draft picks (12), Jets general manager John Idzik hasn't reeled in any big-name free agents this offseason aside from wide receiver Eric Decker. But by signing Johnson, the Jets could instantly upgrade their running back corps -- provided he still has a lot left in the tank.

If Johnson is close to being the same guy he was in Tennessee, he would be a nice complement to the Jets' No. 1 back, Chris Ivory. While Johnson's game is predicated on speed and agility, Ivory brings a punishing style between the tackles.

Everyone knows Rex Ryan loves the ground and pound game.

But will Johnson enjoy being in a crowded backfield?

Following the Titans' signing of ex-Jet Shonn Greene last offseason, Johnson said that he's "never been a big fan of the two-back system."
