The Stroller Strides franchise that spans most of Nassau County has a new owner — Cara Winer, 39, of Woodbury.

Winer did the exercise program with her daughter when the baby was about 6 months old. When she heard that former owner Beth Kichel of Bellmore was ready to sell, the then-stay-at-home mom approached her husband, Keith, with the idea of taking on the territory, and he loved it. “He said, ‘Can you call her right now?’”

“Within a week I was on a plane to California to go to the Fit for Moms headquarters,” Winer says. Fit for Moms issues Stroller Strides instructor certifications, training owners in the techniques of the class. Stroller Strides incorporates the infant in a stroller into the exercise class, offering parents cardio, strength and toning while entertaining the kids with songs, props and movement.

During the winter, Winer offers classes in malls, including Broadway in Hicksville and Mall at The Source in Westbury. She also has a class at Take a Bow Playhouse dance studio in Plainview.

In the spring, classes will move to Christopher Morley Park in Port Washington, Eisenhower Park in East Meadow and Cedar Creek Park in Seaford. The group will still use the malls on rainy or too-hot days.

Winer’s daughter, Kennedy, is now 2. “She loves it,” Winer says of exercising with her still-stroller-happy daughter. “She always says, ‘I want to go to Mommy’s exercise class.’”

Winer says she doesn’t plan to have more children. “Stroller Strides is now my second baby, because I want to grow it,” she says.
