Phil Simms says Bill Parcells should be in the Hall of Fame
There’s no question in Phil Simms’ mind. His old coach, Bill Parcells, deserves to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
“Sure I do [think he should be in],” the former Giants’ quarterback said of Parcells, who is a Hall of Fame finalist for the second year in a row. I was shocked last year when he didn’t make it. I was shocked. And I’ve said it on TV, I think they should have to display their votes. I want to know who is voting for and against the guys. I want to know that. I really do. I know it’s a tough process, I understand it.”
So why does Parcells deserve to be in the Hall of Fame?
“All the places he coached, the success he had, that alone. That’s why,” he said. “He was a unique coach, there’s no doubt about it. But when you coach and win two Super Bowls, you take another franchise [New England] to the Super Bowl, and then you have success with getting to the championship game with the Jets and success with the Dallas Cowboys, that’s pretty good. There are a lot of people in the Hall of Fame who did a lot less than him.”
Simms admits he didn’t think much about Parcells getting to the Hall of Fame when the quarterback played for the demanding coach.
“No. Hell no. I’m just trying to survive another day with him,” he said. “I say that and people go ‘Oh, come on!’ No, it was survival. Every day was a new day and a new thing and here you go again. I had Bill when he was relatively young. Usually you mellow as you get older but I had him when he was young. Ok? Does that answer that question? I mean, every day with Bill was … it was good, but it was tough.”
