The Raiders put a boatload of money into signing free agent tackle Rodger Saffold, but the deal is off after the former Rams tackle failed his physical.

Saffold had agreed to a five-year, $42.5 million deal, pending his physical. But the 25-year-old tackle, who has had injury problems through much of his career, didn't check out with Raiders' team docs.

It's a huge blow, not only to Safford, but to the Raiders. There was an early run of offensive tackles in free agency, including Austin Howard, who is penciled in as the Raiders right tackle after leaving the Jets. But all the top-end tackles have signed elsewhere, and the Raiders already decided to move on from Jared Veldheer, who wound up signing with the Cardinals.

Raiders embattled general manager Reggie McKenzie, who is basically in a win-or-else situation this year, isn't off to a good start in free agency, to say the least.

Earlier today, he met with Giants free agent defensive end Justin Tuck, who did not sign a deal as of yet.
