Notable NFL preseason injuries
Football's injured list continues to grow in the preseason. These are the notable names, and here's the complete and updated NFL injury report.
DEMARCUS WARE, linebacker
The six-time Pro Bowler missed the Cowboys' preseason finale against the Dolphins on Aug. 29 with a hamstring injury, but he's listed as probable for the start of the regular season.
MATHIAS KIWANUKA, linebacker
Kiwanuka did not play in the Giants' preseason finale against the Patriots on Aug. 29 because of a groin sprain. He's listed as questionable for the start of the regular season, which the Giants kick off against the Cowboys on Sept. 5 at MetLife Stadium.
PRINCE AMUKAMARA, cornerback
Amukamara was carted off the field during a preseason game against the Bears on Aug. 24 after suffering what was later diagnosed as a mild ankle sprain.
MARSHAWN LYNCH, running back
Lynch has missed the past two days of practice with a back injury and is listed as doubtful for the Seahawks' preseason game against the Chiefs on Aug. 24.
JAMES STARKS, running back
Starks is currently battling a bad case of turf toe that led the Packers to sign Cedric Benson earlier this month. The fourth-year back is questionable for the start of the regular season, and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel speculated he could be cut from the 53-man roster.
JASON PIERRE-PAUL, defensive end
Suffering from back spasms, Pierre-Paul did not play in the Giants' preseason game on Aug. 24. Head coach Tom Coughlin said it's merely a precautionary measure and doesn't expect Pierre-Paul to have any long-term problems. He's probable for the start of the regular season.
ADRIAN PETERSON, running back
As he continues to rehab his torn ACL and MCL, which he suffered on Dec. 24, 2011, Adrian Peterson will sit out the final two preseason games. Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said the move is just a precaution.
DEZ BRYANT, wide receiver
Bryant underwent an MRI on his right knee, which he injured during practice against the Chargers on Aug. 20. He was diagnosed with patellar tendinitis, and there was no structural damage. Bryant missed the Cowboys' preseason finale but is probable for the regular season.
MICHAEL VICK, quarterback
After this hit by Patriots linebacker Jermaine Cunningham, Vick was forced to leave the game Aug. 20 with a rib injury. An MRI and CT scan later revealed he had no broken bones or fractured cartilage. Vick also suffered an injury to his left thumb in the Eagles' preseason opener Aug. 9.
MILES AUSTIN, wide receiver
After missing six games last season with hamstring injuries to both legs, the Dallas Cowboys wideout is still slowly recovering. Austin is out for Saturday's game against the San Diego Chargers, but he's probable for the start of the regular season.
DAVID GARRARD, quarterback
Garrard injured his knee off the field and underwent surgery to clean up the damage. He is expected to miss a month.
LEVI BROWN, offensive lineman
Arizona's starting left tackle, Brown has a torn right triceps and probably will not play this season. Coach Ken Whisenhunt revealed the extent of the injury, saying Brown will require surgery. The 6-6, 324-pound Brown was injured during a preseason game against Oakland on Aug. 18.
BRANDON JACOBS, running back
Jacobs, now with the 49ers, injured his left knee when he collided with cornerback Kareem Jackson's helmet after an 8-yard-run in the first quarter at Houston on Aug. 18. He is expected to miss several weeks, but initial reports claim there was no severe ligament damage.
LaMICHAEL JAMES, running back
The San Francisco 49ers' running back (pictured above getting sandwiched by Houston defenders) twisted his left ankle with four minutes left against the Texans. Coach Jim Harbaugh said James will miss some time but that the injury doesn't appear to be too serious.
AHMAD BRADSHAW, running back
The Giants starting running back left the team's preseason game against the Jets on Aug. 18 early in the first quarter and did not return after sustaining an injury to his right hand. X-rays were negative, but he had a heavy wrap or cast on his lower right arm while on the sideline.
BRANDON MERIWEATHER, linebacker
Meriweather had to be helped off the field after suffering a knee injury in a preseason game against the Bears on Aug. 18.
BRIAN ORAKPO, linebacker
The Pro Bowler left a preseason game against the Bears on Aug. 18 with a shoulder injury. He sustained the injury while attempting a tackle after Bears receiver Devin Hester made a catch. He stayed down on the field for several minutes and eventually had his shoulder wrapped on the sideline.
LEGARRETTE BLOUNT, running back
Trainers looked at Blount after he suffered a groin injury during a preseason game against the Titans on Aug. 17. He limped off the field and did not return. Head coach Greg Schiano said the injury doesn't appear to be serious.
DARRIUS HEYWARD-BEY, wide receiver
The Oakland wideout left a preseason game against the Cardinals with an apparent shoulder injury Aug. 17. He left the game during the third quarter and did not return.
CHRIS CHAMBERLAIN, linebacker
Chamberlain had to be helped off the field after injuring his left knee in a preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 17. An MRI showed he tore his anterior cruciate ligament, and he will be out for the entire season.
ALDON SMITH, linebacker
Smith could miss the rest of the preseason with a hip injury. Despite being listed as questionable, he's expected to return for the start of the regular season.
STEVAN RIDLEY, running back
Ridley suffered a right knee injury during practice Aug. 16 and is listed as questionable for the Patriots' Aug. 20 preseason matchup against Philadelphia.
DESMOND BISHOP, linebacker
Bishop was helped off the field after injuring his hamstring in a preseason game against the Chargers on Aug. 9. He's doubtful for the start of the regular season.
MORRIS CLAIBORNE, cornerback
The Cowboys rookie missed the preseason opener against the Raiders with a sprained MCL in his left knee. He's returned to practice but is questionable for Dallas' preseason game against San Diego on Aug. 18.
TRENT RICHARDSON, running back
The two-time BCS national champion recently underwent surgery on his left knee, but the Browns are hopeful he'll be ready for Week 1. He's listed as questionable for the start of the regular season.
DRE KIRKPATRICK, cornerback
The Bengals' top draft pick fractured a bone in his knee while preparing for training camp. He's questionable for the start of the regular season.
TORREY SMITH, wide receiver
Smith picked up 43 yards on three catches before leaving the Ravens' preseason opener Aug. 9 against the Falcons with a sprained ankle. He was also inactive for Baltimore's preseason game against Detroit on Aug. 17, but he's probable for the start of the regular season.
MICHAEL VICK, quarterback
Vick suffered an injury to his left thumb in the Eagles' preseason opener against the Steelers on Aug. 9. He's struggled to stay healthy in the past and is listed as questionable for Philadelphia's preseason game against New England on Aug. 20.
SHAUN ROGERS, defensive tackle
Rogers is out for the season with a blood clot in his left calf. He first experienced swelling in his lower leg following the Giants' preseason opener against the Jaguars on Aug. 10.
JIMMY GRAHAM, tight end
Graham missed the Saints preseason opener with a back injury, but he's been back on the practice field since Aug. 14. He is listed as questionable for New Orleans' game against the Jaguars on Aug. 17, but he's probable for the start of the regular season.
RYAN MATHEWS, running back
San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews is out for the rest of the preseason after breaking his collar bone in the Chargers' preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers. Mathews is expected to miss four to six weeks.
JERMICHAEL FINLEY, tight end
The 25-year-old has missed both preseason games for the Packers with a quad injury. He's questionable for Green Bay's preseason game against the Bengals on Aug. 23, but he's probable for the start of the regular season.
JASON WITTEN, tight end
The 6-6, 261 pound Cowboy, who's out with a spleen injury, has only missed one game in his career because of a fractured jaw, but he's out for Dallas' preseason game against the Chargers on Aug. 18 and is listed as questionable for the regular season opener against the Giants.
ISAAC REDMAN, running back
Tests revealed that Redman has a hip injury that won't require surgery, but he's out for Pittsburgh's preseason game against the Colts on Aug. 19. With Rashard Mendenhall returning from a torn ACL, Redman has a chance to battle for the No. 1 spot on the Steelers' depth chart. But things may have changed after Pittsburgh activated Mendenhall from the PUP list Friday.
DENARIUS MOORE, wide receiver
Moore missed the Raiders' preseason opener against the Cowboys on Monday with a hamstring injury. He's out for Friday's game against the Cardinals.
NNAMDI ASOMUGHA, cornerback
Members of the Philadelphia Eagles training staff transported Asomugha off the field Monday after Asomugha collided with safety Nate Allen during a drill at practice. Asomugha reportedly has no concussion but is suffering from whiplash-type symptoms and a lacerated lip. He's questionable for the Eagles' preseason game against the Patriots on Aug. 20.
SANTONIO HOLMES, wide receiver
Holmes was treated for back tightness on Aug. 15. He also suffered a sore rib and a hamstring injury during training camp. Holmes is listed as doubtful for the Jets second preseason game against the Giants, and he's questionable for the start of the regular season.
ANDRE JOHNSON, wide receiver
Coming off an injury-plagued season, The Natural has yet again suffered a setback this year with a groin injury. Johnson said he expects to play against the 49ers on Aug. 19, but he is listed as questionable. He hasn't played a full season since 2009.
STEPHEN HILL, wide receiver
The rookie injured his right ring finger during camp Aug. 14. With Santonio Holmes dealing with a few injuries, Hill was expected to get more action, but now he's also listed as questionable for the Jets' preseason game against the Giants on Aug. 18.
MARVIN AUSTIN, defensive tackle
Giants head coach Tom Coughlin sounded much less confident about Austin's back injury Aug. 16 than the second-year defensive tackle did earlier in the day. Austin will go through more tests and on his ailing back, and will miss the game against the Jets on Aug. 18.
SIONE PO'UHA, defensive tackle
Sione Po'uha will likely miss the rest of preseason with a tight back.
LOFA TATUPU, linebacker
In his first year with the Atlanta Falcons, former Seattle Seahawk Lofa Tatupu will miss the entire season after tearing a pectoral muscle in a recent workout.
BENJARVUS GREEN-ELLIS, running back
The Law Firm could be closed for business to start the season. Green-Ellis suffered a foot injury in the Cincinnati Bengals' preseason opener against the Jets. He is listed as questionable for a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 23, but he is probable for the start of the regular season.
GREG JENNINGS, wide receiver
After missing Green Bay's first two preseason games with a concussion, Jennings could be back on the field as soon as Aug. 19. He's still listed as questionable for the Packers' preseason game against the Bengals on Aug. 23, but he's probable for the start of the regular season.
