NFL to review tapes of ex-Patriots video assistant

The NFL will review videotapes to be submitted Thursday by former Patriots video assistant Matt Walsh, although league sources have said in recent weeks they believe the tapes will not further implicate head coach Bill Belichick and prompt commissioner Roger Goodell to mete out any additional penalties.

Goodell is scheduled to meet with Walsh on Tuesday, after which the commissioner will hold a news conference.

There has been speculation that Walsh had a tape of the Rams' walkthrough practice session the day before the Patriots' first Super Bowl victory after the 2001 season. However, the New York Times reported on its Web site Wednesday night that a tape of the walkthrough was not presented to the league and was never in Walsh's possession.

According to the report, Walsh submitted tapes of signals of offensive and defensive coaches in regular-season games against five AFC opponents.

Under NFL rules, teams are not allowed to videotape signals, although teams regularly try to decipher signals by studying them visually, often talking into a tape recorder to describe the signals on any given play.

The league has not received the tapes and did not comment on the report. Walsh's attorney, Michael Levy, confirmed to the Times that the Rams' walkthrough tape was not in Walsh's possession.

Goodell has said repeatedly that he would further punish the Patriots and /or Belichick if further evidence of the team's illegal videotaping procedures surfaced.
