Mag names Gibson 'most liberal House Republican'
Who's the most liberal Republican in congress?
It's Rep. Chris Gibson (R-Kinderhook), according to the National Journal, which ranked lawmakers based on the votes they cast last year.
That might be a surprise to heartland conservatives, but it shouldn't raise an eyebrow among Gibson's constituents, which include people from liberal bastions like Woodstock, Saugerties and New Paltz. But Gibson's 19th Congressional District also includes traditionally Republican Dutchess County, and the retired Army colonel earned the endorsement of the state Conservative Party during his 2010 and 2012 campaigns.
To Gibson, the distinction by National Journal is just proof that he's doing what he set out to do -- pushing for fiscal responsibility while working with members of both parties.
"This is the kind of representation that gets things done, that creates jobs," he told the National Journal. "We can bring people together in an era rife with partisanship and divide."
And that's a big part of his appeal, the magazine says. One man's renegade is another man's centrist.
"Whether that means he is the most liberal, the most moderate or perhaps just the least conservative member of the GOP conference is in the eye of the beholder," the National Journal's Scott Bland wrote.
