Fred Couples: `biggest upset in golf history?'
Fred Couples is old enough to vividly remember Jack Nicklaus' win as a 46-year-old at Augusta 25 years ago. He is wise enough to say that if Tom Watson had won the British Open two years ago it 59 it would have been "really unbelievable."
So how would Couples, at 5 under par through two rounds of the Masters and four shots out of first, view a possible Couples win at 51 this week?
"It would be the biggest upset in golf history," he said.
Which is not to say it's impossible. "I think I can win," he said, having finished a 4-under par 68 with a chronically aching back.
The keys are that he still hits the ball fairly long and mostly, he's playing at Augusta. Figuring in practice rounds, he figures he has played it 200 times. He knows the course and the course rewards knowledge. And he loves it.
What a heck of a weekend. Can you imagine a final pairing on Sunday with Couples and 21-year-old Rory McIlroy? Just hope yours truly and everyone else resists calling it "one for the ages"
At the moment, McIlroy is first at 9 under
Tiger Woods is one over for the day through four holes, even for the tournament. Long way to go
