Joe Saladino wins LI Amateur
Joe Saladino put all of his experience to use in a dramatic 36-hole final match to win the Long Island Amateur, 2 and 1, over 16-year-old Clancy Waugh.
Saladino seemed comfortably ahead after the morning session at Tam O'Shanter Club in Brookville. He was 4 up. He extended that to 5 up early in the second round. But Waugh, who plays at Deepdale and National Golf Links of America, cut it to one with solid putting to go along with his typically long driving.
But on the 16th hole in the second round, Saladino bombed a drive estimated between 330 and 340 yards. He hit an 8-iron to 6 feet (after Waugh had put his second shot on the front of the green) and made the eagle to win the hole. The 2010 Met Player of the Year clinched the win with a par on No. 17.
