Mark Mulder's shoulder forces him out of Mid-Am
Probably the biggest name in the U.S. Mid-Amateur at Atlantic Golf Club and the Bridge in Bridgehampton had to withdraw. Mark Mulder, a 20-game winner for the Athletics who once beat Roger Clemens in a postseason game at Yankee Stadium, had to pull out because of a shoulder problem, a U.S. Golf Association official announced. Mulder’s baseball career was cut short by shoulder trouble, so he has turned his competitive attention to golf.
He won seven events this season on the GolfChannel Amateur Tour, plays to a scratch handicap (righthanded, unlike his lefty pitching) and had qualified for this tournament, which carries an invitation to the Masters for the winner.
Erik Hanson, another former All-Star pitcher, is in the field and tees off at 1:25 p.m.
Phil Mickelson’s brother Tim is playing.
