Motivation for Walker Cup '13 on LI
The U.S. Walker Cup team left Aberdeen, Scotland Sunday with motivation for the next match, which will be held two years from now at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton.
National hosted the first Walker Cup--amateur competition against Great Britain and Ireland—in 1922, when Bobby Jones and Francis Ouimet were on the team, but has not held it since. Given the favored American team’s 14-12 loss last weekend, the 2013 event should have extra flavor. “You know, there’s a few of us who are going to be eligible for the one in two years,” U.S. player Jordan Spieth said, “and I’m going to work hard to try to make that team.”
Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Padraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy all have played in the Walker Cup, as have Long Islanders Len Mattiace and Ralph Howe III.
