Tarik Can shoots 65 on the Black Course

Tarik  Can shot 65 at Bethpage Black Wednesday, only one shot off the competitive course record held by several golfers. Can, who grew up in Douglaston and lives in Manhasset, got himself into contention at the New York State Open.

He made seven birdies and one bogey to go 6 under par for the day and 1 under for the tournament, three shots behind the leader, Greg Bisconti. The latter, a former player at St. John’s whose first collegiate triumph was on the Black, followed Tuesday’s 68 with a 1-under-par 70 Wednesday. Both players went out in the morning wave Wednesday, before the wind kicked up and scores rose.

Can has been a strong player for many years, going back to his days at Cardozo High School, through his college career at Augusta State and into local events as a pro. Last week, he shot 65 to qualify for a Nationwide Tour event.  He had been caddying for Major Manning on that tour for much of this season, then got back into competition.

He is a former student at the David Leadbetter Academy, where one of the other students was Paula Creamer, now one of the stars on the LPGA Tour and the current U.S. Women’s Open champion. The two dated for a while.
