Tiger Woods' agent joins with Derek Jeter's agent
There had been a rumor that Tiger Woods would have a big announcement this morning. All kinds of speculation ensued, such as that he might be done for the year and might be retiring. Hardly.
He made no announcement, nor will he. The news about Woods today is that his agent Mark Steinberg, who recently left IMG, has signed with Excel Sports Management. That is a new firm, whose executives include Casey Close, Derek Jeter's agent.
Close signed on in April with former IMG employee Jeff Schwartz in Excel, a firm that also represents Ryan Howard of the Phillies and Paul Pierce of the Celtics.
The other rumors didn't make a lot of sense. You wouldn't expect Jeter to make a major announcement on Golf Channel, rather than tigerwoods.com, and on the week of the British Open.
How does this affect golf in general? Not much right now. As Brandel Chamblee just said on Golf Channel, Woods' marketability is tied completely now to his winning.
Woods and Jeter have been tied before, under the Nike umbrella, and in commercials for Gillette (with Roger Federer)
