Van Orman, Hartmann, Mielke among first-round winners

Defending champion Bill Van Orman of the Meadow Brook Club, 2009 champion Rick Hartmann of Atlantic Golf Club, qualifying round medalist Sean Quinlivan of Piping Rock and host pro Mark Mielke all advanced to the Round of 16 in the Long Island PGA Championship at the Mill River Club.

            Van Orman, who defeated Michael Stevenson of Plandome 7 & 5, advanced to play Matthew Sita of Nassau, a 5 & 4 winner over Jack Druga of Shinnecock Hills.

            Hartmann defeated Nick Beddow of Great Rock, 2 & 1, to face David Head of Laurel Links.

            Quinlivan scored a 1-up win over Bob Rittberger of the Garden City Golf Club and advanced to meet Sean Farren of The Creek, a 6 & 5 winner over Charlie Bolling of Fresh Meadow.

            Mielke defeated Tim Puetz of the Hamlet, 3 & 1, to reach a Round of 16 match against John Gatta of Middle Bay, a 2 & 1 winner over Piping Rock’s Eric Tuscan this morning.

            Other round two matchups: Mark Meehan of Pine Hollow vs. Larry Refvik of Hempstead, Matt Dobyns of Deepdale vs. Rob Corcoran of Poxabogue, Len Bush of Brookville vs. Rob Gick of Sands Point and Scott Ford of North Hills vs. Scott Wise of Rockaway Hunting Club.
