Champions Tour president Mike Stevens said Tuesday he received “a lot of smiles, a lot of shaking heads” when he told tour members that one of their majors, the Constellation Energy Senior Players, would be at Westchester Country Club Aug. 15-21.

ClubCorp, a national golf firm, has announced the purchase of the three Hamlet courses on Long Island. Newsday's James Bernstein had reported last month that this was imminent. The company bought the properties from the Holiday organization, which was said to be in negotiations for the former Links at Shirley, in order to develop the property.

It's a busy week for assistant pros. Some of them were in the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier Monday at Canoe Brook in Summit, N.J. Many were in the first round of the Long Island Open at Wheatley Hills Tuesday. Many others were in the latest installment of the local Assistants Tour at Laurel Links on Monday.

You have to wonder when we will see Tiger Woods again this season, if at all. He must really be hurting to have dropped out of the U.S. Open, which he announced today. The last time the Open went on without him was 1994, when he was 18 and had yet to win the U.S. Amateur (which got him into the 1995 Open at Shinnecock).

Matt Sita, representing the Nassau Country Club, shot 7-under par 65 at Wheatley Hills Golf Club Tuesday to take the 18-hole lead in the 54-hole Long Island Open. The 41 golfers who qualified will play 36 holes on Wednesday.

The only challenge for Frank Darby in coaching Keegan Bradley at St. John’s was finding him a place to play golf during the Christmas break.
