Fore Long Island
Long Island golf courses and golfers mixed with a splash of PGA and other pro tours.
Fred Couples is old enough to vividly remember Jack Nicklaus' win as a 46-year-old at Augusta 25 years ago. He is wise enough to say that if Tom Watson had won the British Open two years ago it 59 it would have been "really unbelievable."
So how would Couples, at 5 under par through two rounds of the Masters...Read more »
Look at it this way: Tiger Woods has a fresh start. He's at par after 19 holes, 53 to go. He bogeyed No. 1
Arjun Atwal just began, in the group behind Woods, and is in the fairway.
Meanwhile Rory McIlroy is two under through five holes and is 9 under. Not having the same start he did with his...Read more »
Alvaro Quiros, Jhonattan Vegas and Gary Woodland are the best show out there. The threesome playing behind Phil Mickelson's group is full of life and raw power.
First of all, Quiros just moved back into a tie for first (with K.J. Choi) at 8 under. He put his second shot on No. 7 within six feet and made the putt. Then he striped one on off the tee on the par 5 8th. The guy just loves the whole...Read more »
This is what I was referring to in the column in today's paper. The likes of Y.E. Yang make it tough for Tiger Woods to dominate the way he did early in the 2000s. Yang, who beat Woods head-to-head at the 2009 PGA (unthinkable up to then) is a good, tough, strong-willed competitor. He was two shots out of the lead yesterday and started with a bogey. But he has birdied...Read more »
Tiger Woods tees off at 1:48 p.m. today, which is good news for the people who like to watch him. There will be a lot of Tiger on the telecast (unlike the U.S. Open, which is on TV all day, the Masters limits TV time to the late afternoon). It also probably is good for him.
Phil Mickelson,...Read more »
Tiger Woods secured his second consecutive birdie, on the par-4 14th, and is now under par. So maybe he's got a good week in him.
Not so for Arjun Atwal, The former Long Islander followed his triple bogey on 12 with a double on the relatively easy par 5 13th. And he's in the trees on No. 14. He's 8 over and now it's a matter of just trying...Read more »
Minutes after Tiger Woods scrambled to make par on the same little but dangerous 12th hole (out of the front bunker), his friend Arjun Atwal had a real rough go there. Atwal hit his tee shot in the water, took a drop, put his next shot in the bunker, blasted out and two-putted for triple-bogey 6.
He's 6 over for the day (5...Read more »
Spoke too soon about Tiger Woods and Arjun Atwal playing solid. Woods just made his second consecutive bogey. His putt on No. 11 rimmed the cup and stayed out. And Atwal made a double on No. 10. He's 3 over for the day.
Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, is still 7 under. He had an eagle putt on 15 that didn't miss...Read more »
Arjun Atwal made the turn at 1 over, which is not bad considering he seemed disappointed over having misssed decent birdie chances of six or seven feet on both the par-5 second and par-4 third.
He made two bogeys, and believed he had made a third on No. 6. As soon as he took his par putt, he started walking, signaling that he was sure he had missed. But the ball went in.
Atwal, the...Read more »
Tiger Woods has played steadily so far. He's at par through 10 holes, which isn't spectacular but not bad either. It is kind of in keeping with the opening rounds he has had in many majors that he has won.
Most telling perhaps is that he has not had any...Read more »
