Great starts for Goosen, Fisher; Tiger underway

Tiger Woods tees off in a minute, with Graeme McDowell and Robert Allenby

It will be a challenge for all of them to match the starts of Retief Goosen, the 2002 runnerup here, who eagled the first hole and is 3 under after three; or Ross Fisher, who led all four majors (including the Open at Bethpage) in 2009. Fisher is 4 under through...

Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus get it started

AUGUSTA, GA - APRIL 07: Arnold Palmer (L)

(Credit: Getty/Harry How)

Jack Nicklaus, the second of the legends to hit, bent down to put his tee in the ground and said, “Now if I can get back up…”

Don’t let him kid you. Nicklaus was ready and primed to be an honorary starter at the Masters, along with his friend and half-century rival Arnold Palmer. Each man wanted to hit a good shot, which they did. And you get the impression that Nicklaus,...

Sights 'n Sounds at Augusta

Keeping the eyes and ears open at Augusta National, a tradition like no other:

Bill Murray and a few buddies were just hanging around near the practice green the other day. A few folks recognized him, including a brazen fellow wearing U. of Georgia garb who kept...

Tiger's game is `close,' says Arjun Atwal

The golfer who sees Tiger Woods play most and from closest range, former Long Islander Arjun Atwal, agrees with Woods that the four-time Masters champion's game is coming around.

"He’s really close. Like he said, if he can just bring it out…I think he’s going to do just fine around...

Phil: Amy's doing well, so's he

Phil Mickelson did not get into specifics about his wife Amy's condition as she continues to recover from breast cancer. He never does. But he did say that the whole family is doing much better than it was at this time last year, when they all got a huge boost from him winning the Masters and Amy being here to see it.

Tee times for Tiger, Atwal, Phil

Tiger Woods will start this year's Masters at 10:41 a.m. Thursday, according to grouping sheets that just came out. He will play with U.S. Open champ Graeme McDowell, who famously stared down Woods in the latter's own Chevron tournament in December, and Robert Allenby. I'm sure Allenby will be thrilled with the attention.

This time, Westwood's plane was smoking

At various majors, including the Masters last year, you could say Lee Westwood was smoking. The guy has been hot enough to almost win a few times (he was the third-round leader here in 2010). But that’s nothing compared to the plane he took on the way to Augusta from Houston.           ...

Fierce overnight storm hits Augusta

A howling thunderstorm overnight caused a delay in opening gates for the patrons here at Augusta National today. Instead of letting people in at 8, officials pushed the opening to 8:45 to clean up debris from the fierce storm. A local radio station said "sources" indicated a 100-year-old magnolia tree was downed, but no announcement on that...

Mark Wilson, honest winner, going to the Masters

Not to worry, Mark Wilson held on to win the Sony Open and he will go to the Masters.

The Masters didn't automatically invite all Tour winners (as it does now) in 2007, when he won the Honda despite having called a two-stroke penalty on himself for something his caddie did (in an act of kindness toward a...

Hogarth impressed by Smith

Tim Hogarth had this to say about Nathan Smith's 5-under par round in the morning, during which Smith went 5 up and essentially decided the final match in the U.S. Mid-Amateur at Atlantic Golf Club: "That was one of the best rounds I've ever seen. He played phenomenal.:

            Hogarth added that he was...
